I Never Thought I Would Have A Yoga Room
I never thought I would have an entire yoga room in my house. Yet, here I am with a neat little yoga room. It had humble origins--just a chair, wood pallets, and a yoga mat. A few elastic exercise bands hung from random places. Over the past two years, it has become a pretty charming place, though. Now I have a beautiful stained glass peacock lamp, salt lamps, decorative strings of lights, and plants. My mat stays permanently unrolled because every 15 minutes or so that I am doing work in my yoga room, I stop and do some asanas.
I use to think that I would just go to a yoga class instead of creating my own yoga space. However, the more I advanced in my own practice, and the more I learned about yoga in my own body, the less I belonged in regular group yoga classes. That's actually why I only teach private yoga lessons. In yoga studios, in group lessons, instructors don't have the time to individualize practices for people like me who have severe issues in their bodies. At least, that's been my experience.
Therefore, I have created a yoga room in my house. I'm surprised when I look at it and see the cheery little place that I am creating for myself. I usually always have my big red cat curled up somewhere in here, too. It's my refuge when I have hours upon hours of graduate work to accomplish or continuing education for my own yoga certification. I let my readings play on text-to-speech and listen while I lay upon my yoga mat and do restorative poses.
I never thought I would have a yoga room in my own home, but it sure is nice to have this place of calm solitude to balance the intensity of my growth.
