Little Homestead

We're developing into a little homestead. I love cooking with cast iron. Caleb loves making sourdough bread. Aidan loves raising chickens. Alafair loves Raising Cane's chicken.

Alafair doesn't actually seem to like any aspect of homesteading, yet. She used to think she liked having chickens, but the newness wore off of that.

I've been able to keep a few succulents alive, but I haven't tried my hand at gardening anything. Most plants that come into my care die.

Caleb does try to garden, but it's tricky in this environment. It's so hot and dry that getting a watering system set-up for his plants hasn't been a straight-forward endeavor. The birds will absolutely obliterate a soaker hose that hasn't been craftily hidden, because they are thirsty for water sources. They also destroy the crops. So, it's been a learning curve for Caleb. I think he's realized that he needs to put a fence over the top of the garden.

We'll eventually get it figured out. I assume that Caleb will start making progress on his garden when he retires from the Army in a few years. Until then, any plants that do manage to survive, I take as a little message from God, and I look up their plant spirit symbolism. I always enjoy seeing how those messages connect with our lives.
